Diabetes Center held their annual UCSF Obesity & Diabetes Research Scientific Retreat in March, bringing together UCSF, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and Buck Institute. The keynote speaker was Dale Abel MD PhD, William S. Adams Distinguished Professor and Chair at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Made possible by the Nutrition & Obesity Research Center (NORC)—an NIH NIDDK funded center providing research infrastructure, including research services, enrichment programs, and collaborative activities, at academic/medical institutions throughout the United States—this year's topics covered a wide array of themes, including precision nutrition, beta cell development and disease, hepatic metabolism, genetics and biology of weight control, adipose tissue heterogeneity and function, immunology diabetes and metabolic disease, and cutting-edge tools and techniques to explore basic biology. The retreat also included a poster session, career development panel discussion, and morale-building events.
"It was wonderful to once again see participants from across all departments at UCSF, and from UC Berkeley and UC Davis come together in such a beautiful setting," said program manager Myra Gloria. "There has been a significant amount of interest in NORC after the retreat.
Thanks to all the speakers, the planning committee co-chairs Christian Vaisse and Suneil Koliwad, the social planning committee, and Myra Gloria and Tina Young for all their hard efforts.
