Diabetes Teaching Center - Adults
Over Thirty Years of Service and Support
If you have diabetes, you know you must act as your own health advocate. You must take meticulous care in the daily activities that most people take for granted such as meal planning and exercise. You must learn proper use and administration of medications and blood glucose monitoring equipment. Most importantly, you must learn to recognize the symptoms of complications of your disease so that they may be prevented or treated in their early stages.
It is for this reason that we at UCSF have traditionally placed great emphasis on the education of individuals with diabetes, in order to assist them in managing the extraordinary change in lifestyle that necessarily accompanies the disease.
Established in 1978, the Diabetes Teaching Center is distinguished among self-management outreach programs in that we place an emphasis on individualized care – teaching patients how to recognize their own individual patterns of response to their diabetes. Our program enables patients to make more consistent and appropriate adjustments in their therapy and lifestyle.
Specialized classes include:
On its 30th anniversary, our UCSF Diabetes Teaching Center blazed a new trail by creating an online diabetes education resource for individuals with diabetes and their family members, Diabetes Education Online.
NEW! Our Diabetes Teaching Center is proud to announce their new interactive mobile app that teaches people how to manage their diabetes, DiabetesIQ. Developed as a free download by the Teaching Center and QuantiaMD, a company headquartered in Waltham, MA, the new app is intended to help improve human health by turning the task of managing diabetes into an interactive game experience and bringing it to users of the Droid, iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. For more information, review this UCSF News Office Story.
Our teaching center has also launched a program offering free, one-hour diabetes group instruction to Bay Area employees. These informational sessions are led by Peggy Huang, RN, CDE, an accomplished diabetes nurse educator who co-founded the teaching center. If your employer is interested in our program, please contact Lorraine Stiehl. [ Public Affairs Story ]
