Type 1 Diabetes Screening Program

We are leading efforts to expand screening for type 1 diabetes in clinical settings, with a focus on identifying individuals at increased risk before symptoms develop. While traditional screening has focused on family history, most individuals diagnosed with T1D do not have a family history of the condition, underscoring the need for broader screening approaches.

Screening is performed through simple blood tests that detect islet autoantibodies, which can appear years before clinical diagnosis. In addition to standard laboratory testing, the program offers convenient fingerstick dried blood spot kits that can be completed during routine clinic visits. Patients who screen positive are referred to the UCSF At-Risk for T1D Clinic for further evaluation, monitoring, and discussion of potential interventions.

By integrating screening into routine care, this program aims to enable earlier diagnosis, prevent complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis at presentation, and expand access to emerging therapies that may delay disease progression. If you are interested in screening, speak to your provider or contact us.
